Zooey Deschanel and M Ward have been hitting the promotional circuit hard in support of Volume 2. The duo played Letterman on Friday and put on a jazzed-up, cabaret-sounding rendition of “In The Sun” that is just so damn retro and funky that it’s beautiful. She & Him seem to have everything set for the release of their upcoming Volume 2. From what I can tell, everything from 2 sounds like progress from Volume 1‘s own, unique blend of retro soul and country-crooning. Zooey’s eyes are as blue as ever and M Ward has added quite a bit of texture and depth to every bit of the album’s first singles.
As she did with Volume 1‘s “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here“, Zooey has put together a fun, playful little music video for the duo’s latest single, “In The Sun”. Blue eyes, hula hoops, cute girls in plaid skirts . . . it sounds like a re-telling of everyone’s fond-yet-awkward memories of freshman year of high school.

Zooey Deschanel is one of those “dying breed” types. Any Hollywood starlet would want to be a pop-star, and probably has the means to do so. Deschanel, though, picks her roles well and her collaborators even better. Classic, horridly adorable in that “cute and natural” sense, and endlessly talented, Deschanel didn’t aim for the pop route . . . she aimed for the classically-trained crooner path. Along with solo-artiste/Monsters of Folk collaborator, M Ward, Zooey puts together a Dolly Parton act that is even more endearing than the songs of days’ past. She & Him’s first album, Volume One, lay dormant on the shelf of many a cult-follower, but the new track, “In The Sun” shows off her songwriting abilities like never before. Sultry, yet vulnerable, “In The Sun” is the prelude to more great music coming from this duo.
I just wonder when the Ben Gibbard (Deschanel’s husband) track will premiere.
