Track of the Day: Yeasayer – “O.N.E.”

mp3: “O.N.E”
Listen to “O.N.E.” from Odd Blood
Labeling music these days is such a contrived tradition. Everybody is the new “afro-jamaican-pop-etc. etc. etc.”, and they’re the next hot thing because of it. Your best friend, in her thick-rimmed glasses explains them as . . . “they’re kinda like Paul Simon meets . . . yadda yadda yadda”. Sometimes though, a band hits it right on the money. With tongue firmly planted in-cheek, Yeasayer describes themselves as “Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel“. The only thing I know is that this trio from Brooklyn, NY is damn talented.
The release of 2010′s Odd Blood has made internet giants out of this band and they deserve every kudos they get. The album is already poised to top numerous “best of” lists for the year and really does churn out your friend’s “afro-pop-synth-samples, Animal Collective meets Paul Simon” critique. Whatever moniker you give them, I can confidently say, “yes they are”. Odd Blood‘s midway point, O.N.E. is a great place to start for newcomers to Yeasayer. Chris Keating’s range is spot-on and travels through the world beats on the epic, 5-minute, breezy dance track.
I only wish I could see this show with The Golden Filter in a NY club. That would be the absolute apex of dance-rock heaven.
