Listen to Catapult from Cornerstone 10″

So it’s been a few days since Track of the Day has been posted . . . finals and looming financial burdens seem to creep into everyday life and TrendRobot seemed to take a backseat.  My deepest of apologies friends.  Throughout the trials and tribulations, music was there everyday of course, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was in an old mystery movie, complete with a noir soundtrack, written and performed by the new-look, new-sound Arctic Monkeys.

This band has morphed from the tongue-in-cheek, dancefloor punks from a few years ago, into a heady, dark band that is finding a new sound with an old formula.  “Catapult” seems like the sound that Oasis was trying to find all of those years and is just about as close to a Sgt. Pepper’s sound than anyone’s rolled out in years.  Mixing those dancefloor aesthetics and the dark, seductive weaving of intricacies that brings the Arctic Monkeys into a new, drug-induced realm.

Listen to Written In Reverse

Spoon has to be the re-incarnation of pure rock ‘n’ roll . . . I mean true rock ‘n’ roll before big labels . . . before money and fame were involved.  The indie super-gods are the most infectious, honest act to record music in the last decade and never fail to swagger through their acclaimed catalog.

“Written in Reverse” is the first single from the band’s upcoming Transferrence album, to be released this January.  The track is a dirty, sexy sprawl through a nightclub.  Beer, shot, and chaser; Reverse is a dancefloor seduction with gritty guitar, entrancing vocal lines and a piano fit for Top Gun fame.

Write it in reverse . . . just don’t get too worked up until January.

Please . . . educate yourselves in the ways of Spoon

Track of the day: The xx – “Insects”

TrendRobot Rating: 8/10

Your slow transition from sleep to awakening begins as the sun rises and leaks between the curtains. The question of whether the day will be charged with nitrous or as placid as a drop of honey in a cup of tea depends entirely on your state of mind.  Emotionally charged or not, the movements are timed precisely.

“Insects” is a b-side from The xx, one of the most critically-acclaimed indies to hit the scene in the past year.

The track pushes it’s eminent sexuality and jazziness subtly on its captive audience.  Working it’s way through a stunningly abrupt, yet smooth, two minutes of sensual crooning; the track works its magic only to leave the listener waiting to write their own ending.

Sights: Dan Auerbach – “Trouble Weighs a Ton”

I find this wonderful rendition of Auerbach’s “Trouble Weighs a Ton” from Sirius XMU and I’m now sans-beard.  I had a straight-razor shave the other night and I can’t but think how much more soulful I’d be with a full on beard.  I just know that my facial hair will never reach the level of the mythical Black Keys frontman.

without further adieu . . .

Listen to What Would I Want? Sky from Fall Be Kind

Less than a year after Merriweather Post Pavillion topped  every “best of” list and was named one of the most important albums of the decade by Q Magazine and Pitchfork, Animal Collective has released an EP of new studio tracks under the title Fall Be Kind.

Animal Collective’s trademark style blazes through layer upon sonic layer of epic organs and keyboard symmetries . . . atmospheric would be an understatement for the track, “What Would I Want? Sky” as it fills in with clashing percussion pieces before falling into a melodic masterpiece.

Animal Collective proves, once again, to be as elusive as Jake Johnson.

The Swell Season's Strict Joy is a fantastic labor of love lost

Listen to “High Horses” from Strict Joy

Strict Joy, as a concept album, may be the most moving, musical composition that the music industry will behold all year.  Chronicling the aftermath of a torrid love affair between ex-lovers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, it is Joy’s longing effect that make it both epic and heartbreaking.

The duo’s first outing, the Once soundtrack, found a couple falling hopelessly in love and critics simply couldn’t resist the simple, romantic whirlwind set to film.  After both acting in the indie-flick, and composing the official soundtrack, the Swell Season were immediately heralded as media darlings from the underground.  However, after eventually winning an Oscar for best original song, the doomed tragedy of a Shakespearean sonnet would lead the two to begin crafting the forelorn melodies of 2009′s Joy.

It isn’t so much the lyrics or even the composition (which is raw yet flawless) that moves Strict Joy along; it is the very shakiness and sincerity of Hansard’s voice.  Commanding most of the lead-vocal duties, his voice echoes and pops through an impressive range.  Layred over blues-ballads and math-rock movements, Hansard’s focus is apparent . . . it’s a genuine love for the person he’s with . . . or was with.
