[Skateboarding] – HBO’s “The Get By” documentary

HBO is doing a lot of cool marketing to promote their show How To Make It In America.  The latest piece of filmwork is the eighteen-minute documentary, The Get By, featuring some of the east coast’s best (Pappalardo, Gall, Jake Johnson, Cardona, etc.).  The rugged truth of skating in NYC.  Watch below or click the HBO link to get the full effect.  [Click here for full-screen:  The Get By]

[Comedy] Conan O’Brien embarks on 30 date comedy tour in support of . . . being legally off-air

Conan O’Brien announced that he will be returning to comedy and entertaining on a 30 date tour that will hit CU Boulder’s Mackey Auditorium on May 9.  Conan’s made the announcement via his newly-instated Twitter account on March 12, and will kick off the “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour” in Eugene, OR on April 12.

The funniest Irishman ever on television seems to be riding the wave of popularity that he amassed during the NBC debacle of a few months ago.  NBC and O’Brien’s agents signed deals that would keep O’Brien from jumping ship and joining other networks until the fall.  Many moves have been rumored, including internet deals, and pressure from fans to move to an edgier format on Fox.  The only thing for sure at the moment is Conan’s live return to showmanship this summer.  Stay tuned to TeamCoCo.com for more details as they come along.

Tickets are available via Ticketmaster, and range from $40-$80.

[Skateboarding] Omar Salazar signature shoe from Nike

Omar Salazar’s first signature shoe from Nike SB has dropped and it’s a doozy.  This clean little space boot has all of the amenities of current technology, as well as some from 2001:  A Space Odyssey . . . wait, now my brain just hurts.

The Salazar, for all intents and purposes, looks beefy enough to withstand just about anything you can throw at it.  An extra large stash pocket (think old Muska shoe stash pockets) enable you to conceal whatever prized goods you may be toting, and the lightweight cupsole melds with Nike’s foam and phylon footbeds for a bouncy, comfortable step.   The shoe may not look as appealing on the shelf, but ultimately, once you get it on, it’s comfortable and looks pretty aces under some jeans.

The word on the street is that Omar has been absolutely annihilating stuff in his new kicks, and Nike recently released a mini-site devoted entirely to the space-age footwear.  For those of you who are dying to try a pair, SkateDaily will be giving away 5 free pairs in their latest contest.  Follow the link for more details:  [SkateDaily]

[video] Zach Galifianakis SNL monologue

TrendRobot is, afterall, about pop-culture, and Saturday Night Live, at one time, was a pop-culture institution.  Things have been sadly lackluster in recent years with the exception of Jason Sudeikis, but last week’s episode was nothing less than brilliant with Zach Galifianakis at the helm.  The monologue alone set a new standard for comedy . . . I only wish that this short, stalky, bearded man could host every week.  It was even great to hear the little comment about “skinny kids in skinny jeans” while Hoobastank Vampire Weekend was the musical guest (if only he had mentioned boat shoes).

Brutal and Spooky. No, it’s not another Rob Zombie movie.

The Artist: Todd MacFarlane is the mastermind behind so many childhood memories I just don’t know where to start. Creator of the world renown comic series Spawn, his art style is immediately recognizable and provokes a myriad of responses from various folk the world over.
The Writer: Kirkman has already recieved accolades on this, your most circuitus of news and culture sources. Our very own BRQ lauded the man for his genius work on Walking Dead. I’m forced to agree, as a comic writer he is in a league of his own, unparalleled.

So what have they been up to lately that would provoke written word from yours truly? Possibly the next great american comic. Haunt

Following in the footsteps of Spawn we once again have a semi-dead hero who uses a kind of symbiotic suit. Catch?  It’s two brothers.  The dead brother was part of a secret government organization and was on a hot trail to stopping some serious corruption. The living one is a priest who obviously had some serious issues with what his brother did for a living and the fact that he stole his woman. The story picks up when the dead brother begins haunting the living one and acting as his guardian angel(ghost?) now that international bad guys are on his trail. Interesting? I’d say. Right now is the perfect time to jump into this story line as the next episode is a sort of reloading, a view of the very first issue from another perspective.

Go drop $4, you won’t regret it.

Headphones: Aerial7 – The Chopper 2

After being provided with a pair of the Chopper2 headphones by Aerial7, a robot does what he can to test them, put them through the ringer, and see if they emerge proper. These guys certainly put down some beats, but are they the pair for you?  Read on

I’m a headphone junkie . . .  I’ve gone through countless pairs since the time I was in 6th grade when our school started to allow us to bring CD players to class.  It wasn’t long before I was begging my mom for those “DJ style” headphones and got an entry level pair of Sony headphones.  Since then I’ve been through them all; Phillips, Bose, Apple iBuds, Sennheiser, Skullcandy and recently I picked up a pair of Beats by Dre.  I use headphones all day, every day.  At home I have a pair on almost every minute I’m there.  So of course when I’m sitting down with a new pair I have a set test I use to see how much I like the sound and feel.

“I can’t die. I have too many men to kill” Yojimbo.

I feel the quote from Yojimbo (directed by Akira Kurosawa… go watch it, edify) is especially fitting to introduce what is possibly the best comic I’ve read… period.

Vagabond follows the story of two young ronin.  The main character Takezo and his semi-sidekick Matahatchi, childhood friends, have left home to become men of the sword.  They separate, after Matahatchi takes up residence with a mother and daughter who take the young men in off a bloody battlefield.  Takezo begins his journey on the path to becoming a legendary samurai.  After returning home and being shunned he takes on a new name Miyamoto Musashi, who is based in reality.  He is a legend in Japan, and was said to have won 100 duels consecutively. The story follows in the footsteps of the greatest samurai stories we have, and while it’s a story arch that has been told, and retold, and then told some more, it’s just as enthralling now as it ever was.  Repressed love stories, sake abuse, and cold eyed swordsmen abound, and you’ll be asking for more at the end.  Ending on a cliffhanger with each book these are impossible to put down, as I write I’m on book 4 after starting yesterday.  It taps into the most simple human emotions and grabs them, twists them, and strokes them.

A few days too late: The Walking Dead: Book One

While I realize that this review comes almost a decade too late (around 7 years to be exact), I think that the book still deserves the justice of being critiqued. It’s been damn-near impossible to find quality reviews on this book anywhere on the internet, despite it being heralded as an independent success story, and one of the best graphic novels of all time. The spot reviews on Amazon and IGN just simply won’t suffice for me. Did this book change me? No. It made me think . . . which is all you can ever ask any book to do. This review stands as a “thank you” to Robert Kirkman for using the graphic novel as a serious medium for storytelling.

TrendRobot Rating:  10/10

Zombies, vampires, and other horror movies staples have all been cash cows for Hollywood and cable television as of late. This fascination with the otherworldly and the undead has been making a resurgence in pop-culture, seemingly, since George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead was remade in 2004. Beginning one year prior, however, a young comic writer by the name of Robert Kirkman set out on an ambitious, independent comic/zombie-project, that told the story of something even more frightening than the flesh-craving undead. Kirkman immediately threw the readers into a gray abyss that told, through the eyes of his flawed protagonist, Rick Grimes, a story of human nature at its most primitive.

Alien Workshop x Andy Warhol Decks – “Art is what you can get away with”

Alien Workshop has always pushed the envelope with skateboard graphics and has produced great decks with collaborations with Dinosaur Jr. and Rogue Status (Dyrdek . . . obviously).  The latest collection seems suitable for the sect and is, honestly, a bit impressive that they got the licensing to do it.

The Andy Warhol Foundations for visual arts, inc. has licensed these timeless images to Alien Workshop for use on this, one-time only collaboration.  Each of the company’s 10 riders gets a classic Warhol piece on the bottom, in high gloss, with their face on the topsheet in matte finish.

Five decks from Warhol’s Death & Destruction series fit well with riders Heath Kirchart, Omar Salazar, Jason Dill, Grant Taylor and Arto Saari; and five decks from Warhol’s iconic Pop series glamorize Omar Salazar, Rob Dyrdek, Mikey Taylor, Dylan Reider, and internet pretty-boy, Steve Berra.

The decks will come with limited-edition packaging and POP for the first slew of shops to get their orders in.  They drop in time for summer, with a Spring 2010 release date.  [Alien Workshop]

Re: Adidas joins the dark side

So for all those Star Wars fans out there as well as Adidas followers and those who appreciate a good old fashioned collab, this post is for you. Good ol’ George doesn’t just license out his cherished space-opera franchise to just anyone. LEGO, CAPiTA, Dark Horse, and Hasbro immediately come to mind as some of the lucky few companies to have the prized Star Wars License. Adidas can now join the exclusive few who have the privileged of joining with George Lucas. *The ad campaign for this gear isnt half bad either. This beat will be stuck in my head for days.*
