[Album Review] Circa Survive – “Blue Sky Noise”

April 20 marked the release of Blue Sky Noise, the third full-length album from Philly-born Circa Survive. The pre-release of the track “Get Out” and the You-Tube bootleg of “Frozen Creek” gave fans a good preview of what was to come as the band took a more aggressive and, arguably, more conservative approach in their writing for this album.  This is not to say that Circa Survive has become anything remotely close to “mainstream”, but, in comparison to earlier recordings, they have adapted some new sounds.

On this album, the band tried to stray away from “singing pretty” and “jerking off all over the song,” as they said in an interview with ShockHound.  Circa’s sound has become known for its chaotic, ambient guitar, and Anthony’s virtuosic “pretty” voice.  Instead, the band has utilized some powerful, driving rhythms and more collective chorus work for an overall more aggressive sound, which is apparent in the first two tracks.  This change in philosophy allowed Anthony to get “gritty”, as he put it, and allowed the rest of the band to come together instead of “jerking off” instrumentally.  They used these new techniques and blended them perfectly with their innovative guitar styling, technicality, and groovability to produce one hell of an album.

If you’re lucky enough to pick up the Deluxe Edition, it comes with the Safe Camp Sessions tracks (3 acoustic rewrites and acoustic bonus track).
