Incoming! New Tunes for 2010!
With the “best of 2009″ now behind us it seems an appropriate time to get stoked on what is to come in 2010. And there really is a lot to be stoked on! Here are a few.
Gorillaz — Plastic Beach
(Release Date: 3/9)
Damon Albarn and Jamie Howlett’s virtual band creation is set to release their first Gorillaz LP since 2005’s Demon Days, and it is bursting with guests. Some of the confirmed guests that will appear on the album include: De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash, and the Horrors.
Frightened Rabbit – The Winter of Mixed Drinks
(Release Date: 3/9)
The Scottish indie folk band will be returning with their third album in March this year. Most of the album was written while touring for their last album, The Midnight Organ Fight, and was finished and polished up by vocalist/guitarist Scott Hutchison after the tour. Hutchison noted that this album was more of a studio effort than their last and to expect a more complete album this time around. He explains, “The theme I’m going for is pushing yourself out to the edge of things and being alone, feeling lost and not knowing where you are, which is how I’ve felt recently.” In other words, Winter of Mixed Drinks should make for another emotionally driven album which makes Frightened Rabbit so great.
Goldfrapp — Head First
(Release Date: 3/23)
Alison Goldfrapp has described the upcoming album as being very different from the last and to expect to “go on a journey” with it. Unlike their super-chill 2008 release, Seventh Tree, the duo have said that there will be fast paced synthesizers and feeling of euphoria to look forward to. Sounds pretty trippy!
MGMT — Congratulations
(Release Date: Spring 2010-ish)
In 2007 MGMT came out with their hugely successful debut album, Oracular Spectacular; an album so successful that even Sir Paul McCartney has shown interest in working with them in the near future. In 2010, the wait for the super psychedelia is back. The duo have explained that they went into recording in 2009 with the intention of making an album that should be listened to as a whole rather than having an album with stand out singles. This should make for an interesting sophomore album.
Against Me! — White Crosses
(Release Date: March-ish)
The Florida based punk band had joined up with producer Butch Vig and now new drummer George Rebelo, former drummer of Hot Water Music, and finished recording for their new album back in October and have been sitting on it ever since. Frontman, Tom Gabel, has been telling reporters that it should be out in March, but there has yet to be an official release date. With a tour with Billy Talent scheduled for March it seems like the release would coincide with the tour.
Arcade Fire — Title TBA
(Release Date: May-ish)
The Canadian indie rock stars will return with producer Markus Dravs who also produced their 2007 success, Neon Bible. There hasn’t been much talk on the recording process but the album is expected to drop sometime in May with a single being released in the coming months.
Fleet Foxes — Title TBA
(Release Date: End of 2010)
After their highly successful debut self-titled album in 2008, Fleet Foxes have returned to the studio to begin the recording process for their follow-up. Lead Fox himself, Robin Pecknold, has said that he hopes to record the second album quickly and make it as raw as possible. He doesn’t mind if “there are guitar mistakes or if the vocals are not flawless.” One can only hope that they will not disappoint and be able to release yet another charming album filled with glorious harmonizing.
Radiohead — Title TBA
(Release Date: TBA)
After 2007’s, In Rainbows, Thom Yorke expressed how the band would be focusing on making EP’s rather than making a full-length album. However, guitarist Ed O’Brien said quite the contrary when he posted on the band’s website that a new full-length album was in the works, and should be expected hopefully towards the end of 2010. Personally I wouldn’t mind an EP if need be, just as long as there is some new Radiohead in 2010.
Blink-182 (/Travis Barker/ Angles and Airwaves) — Title TBA
(Release Date: TBA)
After their successful 2009 reunion tour now behind them, Blink-182 has begun the writing process to their first full-length since their self-titled album that came out in 2003. However, it seems as though we will have to wait until the end of the year before we can hear the new Blink but we will have three other albums to keep us occupied.
Travis Barker is working on his own album that should be out within the next four months and has promised that there will be one new Blink 182 track that appearing on it. He is also currently recording drum tracks for a new Transplants album which is also expected to come out before any new Blink 182 material.
Last but not least, Tom Delonge’s space rock band, Angles & Airwaves, is set to release their third album, Love, on Valentine’s day. It is to be released as a FREE CD download on iTunes with a physical copy including over 30-minutes worth of bonus songs. The album will also be released alongside a feature film of the same name. Tom told ABC that, “[the movie] centers on an astronaut who is stranded in a space station as the Earth collapses.”
While this is all going on Mark Hoppus has been tweeting on behalf of all of the new writing for the new Blink-182 album and he has promised a 2010 release.
