Watch for: The Flashguns

For those of you who enjoy Bombay Bicycle Club, Two Door Cinema Club, The Maccabees or really any of the music that is coming out in the UK, this band is for you.

These lads are from London and have a unique sound about them; catchy guitar riffs, solid drums, and earthy vocals all make your feet tap, and head bob to the rhythm. What’s impressive is that the band is still in school working on their A-levels; junior or senior year in high school for most of us states-side kids. It’s impressive to see such mature music coming out of such young musicians. They have only released a couple EPs and singles however The Flashguns are already on the ears and minds of thousands of listeners. They have already toured with the likes of Pete and the Pirates and Bombay Bicycle Club. Keep an eye out for this band, they’re going somewhere.

Formerly called “The Muslims”, The Soft Pack have been working on their debut, self-titled release for the past year and a half.  Hailing from San Diego, this pack of miscreants seems to pull more influence from the eastern Garage-scene than they do the LA hipster scene.  Melodic and catchy, the band rests it’s laurels firmly on 90′s rock, mixed with just a hint of brit-twang and punk rock.  The Soft Pack looks to make mainstream, bread-winners out of the band in 2010, and is being mixed by DC hardcore producer, Eli Janney (Brainiac, Jawbox, Girls Against Boys, Ryan Adams, The Rapture, Satellite Party . . . the list goes on).

This album could turn out to cause more club-panic than the new Spoon album.  Get ready to sweat.

Zooey Deschanel is one of those “dying breed” types.  Any Hollywood starlet would want to be a pop-star, and probably has the means to do so.  Deschanel, though, picks her roles well and her collaborators even better.  Classic, horridly adorable in that “cute and natural” sense, and endlessly talented, Deschanel didn’t aim for the pop route . . . she aimed for the classically-trained crooner path.  Along with solo-artiste/Monsters of Folk collaborator, M Ward, Zooey puts together a Dolly Parton act that is even more endearing than the songs of days’ past.  She & Him’s first album, Volume One, lay dormant on the shelf of many a cult-follower, but the new track, “In The Sun” shows off her songwriting abilities like never before.  Sultry, yet vulnerable, “In The Sun” is the prelude to more great music coming from this duo.

I just wonder when the Ben Gibbard (Deschanel’s husband) track will premiere.

Alien Workshop x Andy Warhol Decks – “Art is what you can get away with”

Alien Workshop has always pushed the envelope with skateboard graphics and has produced great decks with collaborations with Dinosaur Jr. and Rogue Status (Dyrdek . . . obviously).  The latest collection seems suitable for the sect and is, honestly, a bit impressive that they got the licensing to do it.

The Andy Warhol Foundations for visual arts, inc. has licensed these timeless images to Alien Workshop for use on this, one-time only collaboration.  Each of the company’s 10 riders gets a classic Warhol piece on the bottom, in high gloss, with their face on the topsheet in matte finish.

Five decks from Warhol’s Death & Destruction series fit well with riders Heath Kirchart, Omar Salazar, Jason Dill, Grant Taylor and Arto Saari; and five decks from Warhol’s iconic Pop series glamorize Omar Salazar, Rob Dyrdek, Mikey Taylor, Dylan Reider, and internet pretty-boy, Steve Berra.

The decks will come with limited-edition packaging and POP for the first slew of shops to get their orders in.  They drop in time for summer, with a Spring 2010 release date.  [Alien Workshop]

The Bouncing Souls walk the plank on “Ghosts on the Boardwalk”

TrendRobot Album Rating: 5/10

Maintaining a band for 20 years is more than impressive.  Making quality punk rock for 20-years is beyond comprehension.  In a time when all of the flag-bearers of our teenage angst have long-since retired, retracted, or are fading into the limelight, The Bouncing Souls continued to make fast, rebellious, catchy anthems that always made you feel like there was someone in your corner.  Unfortunately though, at some point, everyone has to grow up at least a little bit and it almost seems that one their 20th anniversary, The Bouncing Souls are the ghosts walking the boardwalk and fading into the horizon.

Who is this Socalled?

For those of you unaware, the group is Socalled.  The music is amazing.  The front man is Josh Dolgin…and he’s from Canada, eh?  A mix of various styles and genres; his music is most often referred to “Klezmer Hip Hop”.  Klezmer, being a form of traditional Jewish music, has a very unique sound.  Go forth, educate your circuits. This robot recommends beginning your journey with the “You Are Never Alone” music video.

Wu-Tang Clan + The Beatles = Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers

In this digital age music is constantly evolving as well as being shared. Tom Caruana has created a virtual timeless masterpiece bringing together the 4 lads of Liverpool, England and the Shaolin rappers of New York City. This album is a mash up of sorts, similar to that of Danger Mouse’s Grey Album, which was a blending of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatles White Album. Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers uses samples from various Beatles songs with Wu-Tang’s various members rapping over the remixed beats. This album is far from your ordinary run of the mill mash up, it is incredibly well done and manages to stay true to both The Beatles and The Wu-Tang Clan. The 27 track album mash up was initially available via bandcamp.com, however it seems as though it is no longer posted. But if you are interested in swooping on this album it seems to be available from Tom Caruana’s record label website, Tea Sea Records.

Track of the day: Old Canes – “Little Bird Courage”

TrendRobot Rating:  9/10

It seems like there is something really BIG going on with indie-rock these days.  Epic horn sections, choir-sung choruses, and massive amounts of harmony going on.  It’s all really turning into something great . . . perhaps a throwback to a more innovative age of music.

Old Canes is the brainchild of Appleseed Cast frontman, Chris Crisci.  After releasing 2004′s Early Morning Hymns, Old Canes was signed to Omaha’s pride-and-joy, Saddle Creek Records.  Just released this year, Feral Harmonics continues the Old Canes tradition of making deliciously raw, jangly rock/folk that has a decidedly positive twinge to it.

“Little Bird Courage” was my introduction to this great band.  The frantic drums, lo-fi, speakerbox vocals and hyper strumming all merge into a great folksy rambling that is a road trip in-and-of-itself.

Re: Adidas joins the dark side

So for all those Star Wars fans out there as well as Adidas followers and those who appreciate a good old fashioned collab, this post is for you. Good ol’ George doesn’t just license out his cherished space-opera franchise to just anyone. LEGO, CAPiTA, Dark Horse, and Hasbro immediately come to mind as some of the lucky few companies to have the prized Star Wars License. Adidas can now join the exclusive few who have the privileged of joining with George Lucas. *The ad campaign for this gear isnt half bad either. This beat will be stuck in my head for days.*
